Molecular Hydrogen Formation on Amorphous Silicates Under Interstellar Conditions

چکیده
Experimental results on the formation of molecular hydrogen on amorphous silicate surfaces are presented for the first time and analyzed using a rate equation model. The energy barriers for the relevant diffusion and desorption processes are obtained. They turn out to be significantly higher than those obtained earlier for polycrystalline silicates, demonstrating the importance of grain morphology. These barriers are used in order to evaluate the efficiency of molecular hydrogen formation on amorphous silicate grains under interstellar conditions. It is found that unlike polycrystalline silicates, amorphous silicate grains are efficient catalysts of H2 formation within a temperature range which is relevant to diffuse interstellar clouds (but not to photo-dissociation regions, where grain temperatures are higher). The results also indicate that the hydrogen molecules are thermalized with the surface and desorb with low kinetic energy. Thus, they are unlikely to occupy highly excited states. We report on laboratory measurements of molecular hydrogen formation and recombination on an olivine slab as a function of surface temperature under conditions relevant to those encountered in the interstellar medium. On the basis of our experimental evidence, we recognize that there are two main regimes of H coverage that are of astrophysical importance; for each of them we provide an expressi...
متن کاملGrain formation modulated by molecular hydrogen evaporation in the interstellar medium.
A mechanism for grain growth and formation in the interstellar medium is proposed. In this mechanism, hydrogen molecules act as moderators. The process begins when they physisorb to the surface of the grain. Then, when a collision with a heavy atom occurs, the bonding energy is carried away by the evaporation of hydrogen molecules. Estimates are made of the number of hydrogen molecules bound to...

Introduction: Carbonates have been recently detected in dust shells of evolved stars [1] and protostars [2,3] suggesting that they could form under dry conditions (without liquid water). Around young stars, silicates are mainly magnesium-rich, amorphous and porous dusts [4], believed to form in the interstellar medium (ISM) by irradiation [5]. Such material is far from equilibrium and potential...

We have developed a model for molecular hydrogen formation under astrophysically relevant conditions. This model takes fully into account the presence of both physisorbed and chemisorbed sites on the surface, allows quantum mechanical diffusion as well as thermal hopping for absorbed H-atoms, and has been benchmarked versus recent laboratory experiments on H2 formation on silicate surfaces. The...
